Max Evs For A Pokemon
Endeavor Values
I'thou going to comprehend every single aspect of EV training on this page. A give-and-take of alert; it's a lot to have in if you've never heard of anything about EVs before. However with a little help from some practical examples you lot'll soon be able to start EV training your own team quite easily.
The Basics
What is an "EV"?
EV stands for Attempt Value. They make up one's mind what stats your Pokmonday gets upon levelling up and are gained from contesting whatever Pokmon you come up across that award Experience points. For example;
Chirapsia a Patrat would give all Pokmon that participated in the battle +1 Attempt Value to Set on.
Beating a Frillish would requite all Pokmon that participated in the battle +1 Effort Value to Sp. Defense force.
At the bottom of this page yous'll notice a list of good places to EV train specific stats in Pokmon Black and White and for lists of what Pokmon requite which stat, click the icons below. But for the meantime lets look at the mechanics some more than.
| | | | | |
How do EVs affect stats?
For every 4 EVs y'all proceeds in a specific stat, y'all'll proceeds +1 to your Pokemon's base value in that stat. What this basically means is that if you battle 4 Patrat with your Tepig, Tepig will then proceeds +one to its attack stat (because each Patrat gives +1 EV in the attack stat).
EVs are calculated at +1 Stat indicate per 4 EVs at level 100, which means you won't see the full do good of the EVs you put into your Pokmon until it reaches that level; there will even so be a benefit, just not every bit significant as when information technology reaches the maximum level.
Is in that location a limit to the corporeality of EVs I tin can requite my Pokmon?
Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately) there are two limits to the corporeality of EVs a Pokmonday tin can gain.
- Each Pokemon can have a maximum of 510 EVs.
- One stat can have a maximum of 252 EVs (as of Generation seven) and 255 EVs prior to Generation vii.
This equates to +63 to the affected stat of a Pokmon (at level 100), if you maxed out EVs in that stat. So if nosotros take Tepig and then battle 255 Patrat, we'd be giving it +255 EVs in Attack, then Tepig volition gain a +63 increase to its current set on stat.
The more mathematically minded of y'all may be noticing that this doesn't actually add up. The number 4 doesn't go into 255, so iii of the EV points take gone to waste. You'd be exactly correct. The optimum number of EVs to put into whatever stat is therefore 252. This is explored in a bit more particular after.
When is the best time to start EV training a Pokmon?
The best time to first EV preparation is as soon as yous get that Pokmon, either through breeding or communicable it. Equally presently as that Pokmonday participates in a battle in which it gains experience, it will have gained some EVs.
If you were to brood a Pokmon you probably won't be able to battle with information technology right away, due to it only beingness Level 1. This is where the Exp. Share item becomes extremely useful. Unlike experience, EVs are not divided upward betwixt the Pokmon that gain experience from a battle.
Using our Tepig once again, lets say she is currently level ane and you lot wanted to give her some Attack EVs. Unfortunately Tepig isn't actually capable of beating a Patrat just withal. Put Exp. Share on Tepig and boxing with some other Pokmon, so that Tepig all the same gets experience and as a result volition also go the EVs from that Pokmon.
In simplistic terms, if a Pokmon gains experience from a battle, regardless of the way in which that experience was awarded, it volition receive all EVs it could gain from that boxing.
This all seems similar a lot of piece of work, then what's the benefit?
The best way to testify y'all the benefits is an example, which I'll take from my own Volcarona. One has been fully EV trained. The other has non been EV trained in any particular way, as I used it in my party for my main play through of the game. Run into if you lot tin can gauge which 1 is which.
| Volcarona #1 | Volcarona #2 | |
| Level | 60 | 74 |
| HP | 182 | 240 |
| Attack | 72 | 122 |
| Defence force | 87 | 120 |
| Sp. Attack | 209 | 233 |
| Sp. Defence | 134 | 157 |
| Speed | 194 | 205 |
If you guessed that Volcarona #1 is the one that has been properly EV trained, you'd exist absolutely right. I put 252 EVs into Special Assail, 252 EVs into Speed, and 4 EVs into HP. The divergence is almost notable in the Speed stat; even though information technology is 14 levels beneath #2, Volcarona #1 is merely xi points behind.
The benefits of EV training allow you to tailor your Pokmonday to specific needs for your team. Volcarona here excels at being a fast, hard hitting Special Attacker Pokmonday so it's sensible to put those kind of EVs into information technology; the result is that its stats are far better than what they would ordinarily be if I had just trained Volcarona in a non-EV Specific way.
If you need to bank check your Effort Values, so from Pokmon Sunday & Moon there is a style. In the Pokmon condition screen, printing the Y button on the device and it will change the list of the Pokmonday'south stats to bear witness a graph showcasing its base stats, too as the Effort Points. If the graph is orange, then the Pokmonday hasn't maxed out its Effort Points. If it is Light Blue, information technology has. If the stat is sparkling, and then yous accept maxed out that stat.
The Advanced Stuff.
Now that we have a better agreement of what an Effort Value is, and why they are beneficial it'southward time to wait into some of the more in depth aspects of this role of Pokemon preparation; who knew it was so intricate?
The rule of 252.
I mentioned to a higher place that information technology's pointless to put anymore than 252 EVs into a stat. I'thousand going to lay down the mathematical reasons for this here.
Each stat is given +1 for every iv EVs you put into it. The maximum amount of EVs you lot can give a stat is 255.
255 / iv = 63.75
Patently a stat can't have .75 added to it, then this is rounded off past the game downward to 63, which is the same addition y'all'd go from 252 EVs. Therefore you're wasting 3 EVs if you put anymore than 252 into whatever ane stat. Uncomplicated right? Okay, now lets utilize this to the fact y'all tin take 510 EVs on a single Pokemon.510 / four = 127.5
Because the maximum amount a stat can be added to is 63, you end upwardly with i.5 of a possible stat left over. Again, .five of a stat doesn't exist in the game so this is rounded down to 1 existence left over. Therefore no affair what yous do 2 of your 510 of EVs are going to be wasted. If we expect at my Volcarona again you'll find information technology has 252/252/4, equivalent to 508 effective EVs.With all this in mind we tin can say in unproblematic terms; Don't put more 252 EVs into any stat.
Speeding up the process.
Lets expect at our Tepig again. If we want to give 252 Set on EVs to Tepig y'all might exist thinking that having to boxing 252 Patrat is going to be a chip dull. The skilful news is that in that location are a large amount of ways we can speed up the entire process.
Hordes.
In Pokmon Ten & Y, there is a new concept called Horde Battles. These battles bring five Pokmonday for you to battle at once, and each of them gives y'all the standard Endeavour Value points. They're typically of a low level equally well, making them perfect for Try Grooming. Hordes may seem rare, but they tin be triggered through the use of Honey or the move Sugariness Odour, only only when it isn't raining.
Vitamins.
If you head to the Department store on Route 9 in Black & White, and then proceed to the elevation left corner of the uppermost floor, or in the Pokmon Center in Laverre City in X & Y, y'all'll detect a merchant selling a variety of unlike vitamins for $ix,800 each. They all say they increase the base stat of i specific statistic on a Pokmon. Their effects are outlined here.
| Motion picture | Item | Effect on EVs |
| | HP Up | +ten Hit Point EVs |
| | Poly peptide | +x Assail EVs |
| | Fe | +10 Defence EVs |
| | Calcium | +10 Special Assault EVs |
| | Zinc | +10 Special Defence EVs |
| | Carbos | +10 Speed EVs |
You can use these items up to 10 times, giving you +100 EVs to the stat of your choosing. So nosotros feed Tepig ten Poly peptide, and of a sudden we only have to give 152 EVs via battling, knocking off 100 from the original 252 Patrat nosotros had to battle. Simply in that location'south more!
Power Items.
There are a number of items in the game you can let your Pokemon hold that increment the amount of EVs they gain from battles. Before Lord's day & Moon, the Power Items gave you +iv for each stat, but as of Sun & Moon they requite +eight. Their effects and location are outlined here.
| Pic | Item | Effect |
| | Manlike Brace | Doubles the amount of EVs gained but cuts Speed in half |
| | Power Weight | +8 HP EVs after each battle, regardless of the Pokmon fought, just cuts Speed in one-half. |
| | Power Bracer | +8 Set on EVs afterward each battle, regardless of the Pokmon fought, but cuts Speed in half. |
| | Ability Belt | +viii Defence force EVs subsequently each battle, regardless of the Pokmon fought, simply cuts Speed in half. |
| | Power Lens | +eight Special Assail EVs after each battle, regardless of the Pokmonday fought, but cuts Speed in half. |
| | Power Band | +8 Special Defence EVs later each battle, regardless of the Pokmonday fought, merely cuts Speed in half. |
| | Power Anklet | +8 Speed EVs later each battle, regardless of the Pokmon fought, but cuts Speed in half. |
Because we desire to railroad train our Tepig in the set on stat, lets requite information technology a Power Bracer to hold. If nosotros go and battle a Patrat, instead of gaining +i Attack EV from the battle, we're instead gaining +v EVs from every battle. All of a sudden that daunting figure of 152 Patrat has gone down to only a fraction over 30!
Note besides the Regardless of the Pokemon fought aspect of these items; even if we battled a Frillish with Tepig, we'd still be gaining +4 Attack EVs also as the +1 in Special Defence a Frillish gives, so long every bit she was holding the Power Bracer.
The only downside to these items is the fact that they cut the holders Speed stat in half, yet if you lot have Tepig at the starting position in your political party and immediately switch her out for another Pokmonday, Tepig will still gain the EVs from the item as well equally from the defeated Pokmon.
Wings.
On Driftveil Drawbridge and Marvellous Bridge, occasionally you'll see shadows on the ground. Ofttimes these shadows mark the location of the Pokmon Ducklett and Swanna, notwithstanding from fourth dimension to time you'll as well pick upwards an item. These items are as follows.
| Motion-picture show | Item | Result on EVs |
| | Wellness Fly | +1 Hit Point EV |
| | Muscle Fly | +one Attack EV |
| | Resist Wing | +i Defence EV |
| | Genius Wing | +ane Special Attack EV |
| | Clever Wing | +1 Special Defence EV |
| | Swift Wing | +1 Speed EV |
Unlike the Vitamin items mentioned above, in that location is no limit to the number of wings you can use on your Pokemon to increase its EVs. The simply downside is that they are somewhat time consuming to get concur of in any meaning amount. There is also a seventh type of Wing - the Pretty Wing - which can but be sold and has no other value.
PokRus.
You may take heard of PokRus before, merely there'due south a good chance you haven't seen it. It's an extremely rare virus your Pokemon tin take hold of from battling with wild Pokemon, and if you are lucky enough to become it you lot'll shortly find that it is absolutely wonderful for EV training your Pokemon. At that place are 2 ways of determining whether or not your Pokemon has been infected with PokRus.
Pokemon Middle nurses will finish you the next time you go in to heal your Pokemon and tell you well-nigh the virus. The other manner of finding out if y'all accept the virus is by checking your Pokemon's condition page; PokRus shows upwards as a little purple box with the letters PKRS in the top right mitt corner.
So what use does this accept to do with EV training?
PokRus doubles the amount of EVs you gain from battles and stacks with the power items mentioned above. Lets look at our Tepig once more. Tepig has been fed 10 Protein, meaning she already has 100 Assault EVs in the bank. Next, we've given her the Power Bracer to hold, meaning she gains an additional +4 Assail EVs each battle. Finally lets say nosotros got lucky and have infected Tepig with the virus. At present lets get boxing a Patrat (call back, Patrat gives +1 Attack EV).
If you've been doing the maths as you read along, yous'll know that with all this Tepig is gaining an outstanding +10 Attack EVs per Patrat battled and defeated, cutting the number we need to fight to max Tepig's assault EVs downward to a mere 15.
When are EVs calculated, and can I reset them?
With Blackness and White the manner in which EVs are calculated has been changed. Prior to these games, EVs were calculated each fourth dimension your Pokmon levelled upwardly. This is no longer the case; they are at present calculated after each boxing. What this means is that information technology is now possible for y'all to EV railroad train a level 100 Pokemon, if you so choose.
We also have the ability to reset EVs if we need to. This is washed through using the following Berries.
| Moving picture | Particular | Effect on EVs |
| | Pomeg Berry | -10 Striking Point EVs |
| | Kelpsy Berry | -10 Assault EVs |
| | Qualot Berry | -10 Defence force EVs |
| | Hondew Drupe | -x Special Assail EVs |
| | Grepa Berry | -10 Special Defence EVs |
| | Tamato Drupe | -10 Speed EVs |
They're listed hither as providing a decrease of 10, however, in Generation IV, the beginning drupe you use will reset the EVs for the stat information technology effects to 100. This means in lodge to completely reset a stat we demand to use eleven of the specific berry. In Generation V though, y'all'll demand 26 of the berries to completely remove a stat from maximum
Sadly, Black and White have brought with them no mode of obtaining these berries aside from through the Dream World. The berries will be available through the dream world, but volition likely be more fourth dimension consuming to get hold of than they were in previous generations of the games. X & Y allow for you to abound these berries, simply yous can likewise completely wipe the EVs by earning a Reset Bag in Super Training, or by purchasing the Perilous Soup in the Juice Shoppe.
Super Training
Added into Pokmon X & Y, there is a new method called Super Training. This mini-game, attainable from the very beginning, has you play through various mini-games, each focused upon a certain stat. If you manage to sufficiently complete the mini-game, you will go a boost of Effort Values in that specific stat. Level 1 games add iv Points, Level 2 games add 8 points and Level 3 games add 12 points.
When you complete a game, you also get a Training Bag which can be used on the lesser screen as you lot play for the Pokmon to heave the stats even further. You lot become given these bags depending on your score in each of the mini-game. Each bag can exist either Small, Medium or Large with Modest calculation ane Signal, Medium adding 4 Points and Large adding 12 Points.
To peak that off, when your Pokmon is being trained, it is capped at 252 in each stat, and it allows yous to view the progress of EV preparation through a special graph on the bottom screen. This shows how much each stat has increased and along the side, how much more training the Pokmon can do.
Southward.O.South. Battles
In Pokmon Sun & Moon, Super Training and Horde Battles are gone but Due south.O.South. Battles provide a new way to get Effort Values. When a Pokmon calls for help in boxing, the Effort Point yield for all Pokmonday in the boxing is multiplied by two. This makes it easier to boost your stats. If you're facing a Caterpie, which gives 1 Striking Point EP every bit standard, when information technology calls for help, this is doubled. If yous have Pok Rus and the Ability Weight attached, so this makes each Caterpie you defeat requite you 36 points. Then, in a SOS Battle, you lot'd demand to defeat just vii Pokmon to maximise a stat.
Join Avenue & Festival Plaza
Added into Pokmon Black 2 & White 2, at that place are various parts of Join Artery which allow y'all to enhance up your EVs in massive amounts and even reset them quickly. These are done through items in various shops, which differ depending on the players you interacted with to make the shop. The Fitness, Bistro and Beauty Salon all have items you lot can purchase which will bear on EVs. Fettle & Bistro volition boost them while the ones at the Beauty Salon will lower them. The Festival Plaza in Sun & Moon brought these back with their own new items, including 1 which will outright maximise a stat from 0. Each specific item can be use once a twenty-four hour period

Rare Candies are admittedly fine to use after yous have finished EV training your Pokemon. Pokemon exercise non lose stats if they are levelled with a Rare Candy so long equally they accept sufficient EVs.

Everything should be completely covered here, notwithstanding if in that location is anything else you need to know don't hesitate to inquire in our chat room or forums. Finally, beneath is a list of all the best EV training areas in the game.
